Mount Semeru Erupts Multiple Times, Spews Volcanic Ash in East Java

(MENAFN) Indonesia’s Mount Semeru volcano in East Java erupted seven times within a three-hour span early Wednesday, sending plumes of volcanic ash as high as 800 meters (2,624 feet) above the summit, according to reports.

The first eruption occurred at 4:58 a.m. (2158GMT Tuesday), producing a thick gray ash cloud drifting northeast. Seismic activity reached a maximum amplitude of 22 mm and lasted 138 seconds.

Subsequent eruptions were recorded at 6:10 a.m. and 6:56 a.m., with ash rising between 300 and 700 meters. Another eruption at 7:05 a.m. sent a 600-meter-high column northward. The fifth eruption reached up to 800 meters, and two additional eruptions were reported as authorities continued to monitor the volcano.

Officials advised residents to avoid areas within 500 meters of the Besuk Kobokan riverbank, warning that hot clouds and lava flows could travel up to 17 kilometers (10.5 miles) from the peak.

Located on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” Indonesia experiences frequent seismic activity and is home to more than 120 active volcanoes.
