Powerful Earthquake Hits Indonesia’s Tanimbar Islands

(MENAFN) A forceful earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale hit Indonesia’s Tanimbar Islands in Maluku province during the early hours of Saturday, as reported by US Geological Survey (USGS).

The seismic event occurred in Pulau Tanimbar at approximately 6.20 am (2120 GMT Friday) and was generated at a depth of about 27 kilometers (16.7 miles) beneath the Earth’s surface.

Authorities confirmed that there were no immediate accounts of structural destruction or casualties following the tremor.

In a separate incident, a 5.8-magnitude earthquake struck the area south of Indonesia’s Java Island on Friday, resulting in damage to several buildings and leaving 36 people injured.
