5.9 Earthquake Hits Indonesia’s Tanimbar Region

(MENAFN) An earthquake measuring 5.9 on the magnitude scale struck waters near Indonesia’s Tanimbar Islands in Maluku province during the early hours of Saturday, according to seismic monitoring reports.

The tremor was centered near Pulau Tanimbar and occurred at approximately 6:20 a.m. local time (2120 GMT on Friday). It originated at a depth of around 27 kilometers (16.7 miles) beneath the surface.

Authorities reported no immediate indications of casualties or structural damage following the quake.

The event came just one day after another seismic incident in the country, when a 5.8-magnitude earthquake hit areas south of Java Island. That earlier quake caused damage to several buildings and left at least 36 people injured, according to reports.
